Nightguards and Athletic Mouthguards

Preventive Dental Treatments

When people think of preventive dentistry, they often think of dental cleanings and exams. Protective oral appliances can often play a role in protecting your teeth, as well. By preventing wear, trauma, and broken teeth, you are helping to keep your smile healthy and pain-free.

Nightguards for Bruxism

The amount of force exerted by your jaw can be enormous. This, of course, is necessary for chewing certain foods. But what about when you are not eating? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, millions of Americans suffer from a nocturnal grinding habit called bruxism.

Bruxism, or clenching and grinding, can damage your teeth while you sleep. Even enamel, the strongest substance in the human body, has its limits. When teeth grind against teeth, you can cause erosion, sensitivity, gum recession, fractures, micro cracks, and abfractions (notching on your teeth near the gum line). Over time, you may even develop bony growths under your tongue called tori.

Years of bruxism can age your teeth rapidly, making them appear shortened, worn, and stained from cracks. Bruxism can even cause a jaw condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD). Wearing a custom nightguard as you sleep can protect your teeth from damage.

Our nightguards fit snugly so they stay in place all night. We adjust them to fit your bite comfortably and provide protection when you need it most. Most patients adjust quickly to using a nightguard and often report feeling more refreshed in the morning with fewer headaches.

Custom Athletic Mouthguards

If you play sports such as baseball, football, hockey, and soccer, or if you are a wrestler, you may benefit from a custom athletic mouthguard. Sports are fun and fast paced, and that means that accidents can happen quickly! Just like wearing a protective helmet on your head, your athletic mouthguard fits over your front teeth and absorbs some of the force from impact when things get exciting on the field.

We create custom mouthguards for our children and adult patients who want an appliance that truly stays put. Some of the over-the-counter options do not provide enough protection because they do not fit properly.

Our custom athletic mouthguards come in a variety of colors so that you can share your team spirit. Wearing one could protect you from tooth damage or loss while you’re scoring points on the field.
